East Runton
East Runton is a small village between Cromer and Sheringham. It has a long, sandy beach flanked by sloping sandstone cliffs, where you can see birds nesting within the cliffs. The beach is definitely the biggest attraction, and one of Norfolk's most popular surfing spots. It has the much coveted ‘BLUE flag’ status, and your dogs are welcome to splash in the sea throughout the year.
At high tide the beach does become pebbly, but as the tide goes out acres of sand are revealed. There is a seasonal lifeguard service, and plenty of rock-pools.
Cromers' pier is easily visible towards the East, and is an enjoyable stroll along the beach, or the cliff top. In the other direction is Sheringham and, at low tide I enjoy walking along the beach, then up into the village of West Runton, returning via the coastal path (normally after a little sustenance in the pub, or tea shop!).
There are two Viaducts which separate the upper and lower common. The viaducts were built in 1906, and one is still in use today. On the upper / top common you can also find a small play park.
If you walk along the beach from East Runton to Cromer you will come across a World War Two pillbox, half-buried between the high and low tide line. Pill boxes were used for defence against enemy invasion, and it would've been built in 1940.
The Surfers Memorial commemorates the loss of 3 local surfers, and is overlooking the sea. Alongside the memorial, are steps down to the beach (if you'd rather not walk down the slope).
Sammys Bar and Grill specialises in American style food, as well as handmade pizza and pasta. You can even order food to takeaway! Dog friendly in the bar area, but not in the restaurant.
The Deep History Coast trail covers 36km from Weybourne to Cart Gap, along the clifftops of the coast. There are eleven discovery points. One of which is in East Runton.
